Ashgabat’s historical appellation is The City of Love but nowadays its modern nickname, The City of White Marble will seem vastly more appropriate. Turkmenbashi , the prior president of Turkmenistan, transformed the city from a relatively drab Soviet capital to a city of pure white marble buildings, many containing some rather overbearing symbolism the Ministry of World Affairs building is a perfect illustration.
Short of Pyongyang , Ashgabat is probably the best example of what happens when a city gets redesigned according to the vision of exactly one man, and most visitors will find themselves at first awestruck and then severely confused given the sheer similarity of most of the buildings.

Turkmen women are complaining that the police are taking away their driving licences on spurious grounds, amid reports that the Central Asian country has quietly banned women from driving altogether. Since the weekend, groups of four traffic police have been routinely pulling over female drivers at the busiest junctions in the capital Ashgabat and searching their cars for any reason to take them off the road, according to Chronicles of Turkmenistan , a prominent opposition news site.
If the woman owner refuses to have the car towed away herself, the police call a breakdown lorry to do the job,” Chronicles says. Witnesses reported up to 20 cars lined up along Independence and Neutrality Avenues at a time while their women drivers waited for the police inspection, estimating that vehicles were impounded on one day alone.
The Turkmen service of US-backed Radio Liberty reported similar incidents on Saparmyrat Turkmenbasy Avenue in Ashgabat, complete with surreptitiously-taken photographs. The police have not mentioned any blanket ban on female drivers, but a witness told Radio Liberty’s correspondent that one officer said “we’ve been given an order that women aren’t to drive down major roads in the city”. The correspondent said the unpublished ban applies to policewomen too. One female officer told Radio Liberty that “last week all women in law-enforcement were told not to drive anywhere – we have to leave our cars at the station, and on no account take the wheel”.

In a spirit of collaboration and partnership, IRU is one of twenty one industry associations, representing different modes of transport, who have come together to strengthen cooperation in the framework of an Industry Alliance for Multimodal IAM Connectivity and Logistics for Growth. TIR has been recognised as key to revitalising the Trans-Sahara trade corridor — a flagship project to improve the 9, kilometer road network from Algiers to Nigeria via Tunisia, Mali, Niger and Chad — which is intended to stimulate very weak trade between the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa.
With sponsors including the Islamic Development Bank, the Trans-Sahara Highway project promises to unlock trade potential by improving infrastructure and easing border formalities. Green Lanes would significantly reduce inspections and waiting times at EU external borders and would be particularly beneficial for smaller businesses operating in the road freight transport sector.
Facilitating faster border crossings, Green Lanes would ensure that these enterprises remain competitive. The system would also guarantee that transport operators derive enough benefit through participation in AEO to outweigh the administrative burden of applying for and maintaining AEO status. IRU trucking members meet in Florida to share knowledge on safety, environment and economy in the US.
